Adult/Young Adult Department Computers

A variety of computer services, including wireless access to the Internet, are available to library patrons. Computers located in the Adult/Young Adult Department can be used by library patrons ages 12 and above. In most cases, patrons must sign up to use a computer and have a valid Woodridge Public Library card or some form of identification (school I.D., license, library card from another library, etc.). All patrons must agree to comply with the Library's Acceptable Computer User Agreement in order to use the computers. Computers are also available for use by children in the Children's Department.

Hours of Service

Computers are available for use during the Library's hours of service. Sign-ups for the Internet/Software computers and Software-only computers end 30 minutes before the library closes and the computers are shut down 15 minutes before closing.

Equipment

The following Adult/Young Adult Department computers are located on the first floor of the library:

  • Internet/Software Computers - Twenty (20) computers with Internet access, word processing and other software programs are available to library patrons who have a valid Woodridge Public Library card. Sign-up is required. There is a 90-minute time-limit unless no one else is waiting. Computers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are not taken by phone. Each computer has a CD-RW drive, a USB 2.0 port, and a headphone jack. These computers are able to print in black & white or color. Black-ink printouts are 10¢ per printed page and color printouts are 25¢ per printed page.

  • Software-only Computers - Two (2) computers with word processing and other software programs are available to library patrons who have some form of identification. Sign-up is required. There is a 90-minute time-limit unless no one else is waiting. Computers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are not taken by phone. These computers are able to print in black & white or color. Black-ink printouts are 10¢ per printed page and color printouts are 25¢ per printed page.

  • Internet Express Computers - Three (3) computers with Internet access only and a 15 minute time-limit are available to library patrons on a first-come, first-served basis. No sign-up or identification is required. Each computer has a CD-RW drive and a USB 2.0 port. These computers are able to print in black & white or color. Black-ink printouts are 10¢ per printed page and color printouts are 25¢ per printed page.

  • Reference Database Stations - Three (3) computers are available to library patrons for using the Library's online databases. No sign-up or identification required. Each computer has a CD-RW drive and a USB 2.0 port. These computers are able to print in black & white or color. Black-ink printouts are 10¢ per printed page and color printouts are 25¢ per printed page. Most databases allow materials to be e-mailed to any valid e-mail address.

  • Online Catalog Computers - Seven (7) computers are available to library patrons for finding items in SWAN, the online catalog for Woodridge Public Library and the other member libraries of the Metropolitan Library System. No sign-up or identification required.

Software Programs

The computers have Microsoft Windows XP. Internet/Software computers and Software-only computers have the following programs:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.
  • Microsoft Office 2003: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, Clip Gallery.
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
  • WordPerfect Office 2000: WordPerfect 9, Quattro Pro 9, Corel Presentations 9.

Library staff members are unable to instruct patrons in the use of the above programs.

    Wireless Access to the Internet

    Wireless access to the Internet is available to wireless device users in the library (printers are not accessible.) Wireless devices must be 802.11b/g compatible, have WEP disabled and DHCP enabled. The library does not guarantee connectivity. Library staff members are unable to assist with setting up wireless devices to work with the wireless network. Wireless access to the Internet presents the same security and privacy risks to your personal information as other Internet connections. Wireless device users must agree to comply with the Library's Acceptable Wireless Network User Agreement, which appears online, in order to connect to the wireless network.
