The Children's staff welcomes you to the Children's Department. We offer a
variety of services to children from preschool age through 6th grade, as well as
to parents, teachers, and others who work with children.
The children's collection contains books, videos, magazines, cassettes, CDs,
read-along books and cassettes, books on cassette, and CD-ROMs. Throughout the
year we offer storytimes, reading programs, computer classes, and special
events.
Our staff is happy to help you find whatever you need, from homework help to
planning a children's birthday party, or finding that special book you remember.
We can also make suggestions for good books to read on a variety of levels and
interests. When notified by the schools of assignments, we will create special
displays to reflect the subject of the assignment. The Children's Department
also maintains a collection of textbooks through 6th grade from
District #68, District #66, and St. Scholastica, which can be found in the
Children's Reference collection. Textbooks for Junior High students may be found
in the Young Adult area of the library.
Throughout the year, the Children's Department offers quality programs for
ages preschool through 6th grade. These programs are designed to meet the
needs of specific age levels. Registration is required for most programs.
Programs are limited to Woodridge Library card holders, however, school-age
programs are open to students who attend District #68 schools but live outside
the service area of Woodridge Public Library.
Toddler Time - 2-year-olds and young 3s
Toddler Time is a first-time library experience for toddlers and their
parents, providing an introduction to books and creating the foundation for
continued use of the library. Through stories, songs, and fingerplays we
create a special sharing time for parent and toddler. This program is set up
for a one-on-one participation between parent and child, so children must be
accompanied by an adult. Please make other arrangements for older or younger
siblings. Parents are encouraged to be active participants, doing the
fingerplays and singing the songs along with their child. Toddler Time also
serves as a learning experience in group interaction skills, such as sitting
quietly, listening as part of a group, and interacting with other children.
Parents will learn about appropriate authors, books, and activities to share
with their child. Children must turn two within the first week of the
current session.
Storytime - 3-5-year-olds (Not in Kindergarten)
Storytime will introduce young children to the world of children's
literature. This program incorporates books, felt stories, fingerplays,
music, poetry, puppetry, and storytelling. The format for each week includes
a theme that is carried out in all parts of the program. For graduates of
Toddler Time, Storytime is offered to children ages 3-5 who are not in
Kindergarten. They must be at least three within the first week of the
current session. Parents do not go into the Program Room with their child,
but are expected to remain in the library.
Book Magic - K-3rd grades
Sessions of this program are offered twice a year, for three weeks in
November and four weeks in February. This is a storytime for school-aged
children aimed at K-3 graders. There are after school and evening sessions
which include stories and activities related to the theme for the week.
Encounters of the Library Kind - 4th-6th grades
Encounters programs are for children in 4th -6th
grade. The program may be theme based or a book discussion. These programs
are offered monthly, and may include factual information about the theme or
author, trivia and activities, and a craft.
Computer Classes
The Children’s Department offers a variety of computer classes for 4th
-6th graders and their parents. Classes focus on Internet Safety,
how to search the Internet, and searching the online catalog. Parents are
encouraged to attend these programs with their child. Participation is limited
to 12 individuals.
Summer Reading Program - Preschool - 6th grade
Every summer the library offers reading programs for all ages. For the
children it is important to practice those reading skills during the summer
months. The summer reading program in the Children's Department is for ages
preschool through 6th grade. The children who can read are expected to read
materials at their reading level or above to maintain those skills. Children
who cannot read on their own may join the Read-To-Me Club, and listen to
stories read to them. Children earn prizes for the books they read. Each year
the program follows a theme, which is carried through in the reading folders,
bookmarks, and decorations in the library. This is an eight-week program
offered in June and July.
Special Events
Throughout the year special programs are held for various age groups. These
events include Halloween Haunts, Holiday Magic, Summer Magic, and Encounters of
the Library Kind for K - 6th graders, and Bells and Jingles puppet show and
Twilight Tales for ages preschool - 2nd grade. Watch for special announcements
regarding these.
