altHave you ever wondered just how much you save in dollars and cents by using your public library instead of buying or downloading everything? Have you wished there were a way to see if the property taxes you pay are in line with what you might be saving by the use of your Library card?  Wonder no more.

The Library has added a to our Web site. Spend a few minutes estimating how you have used the Library in the past few months, and plug the numbers into the Calculator. It is eye-opening. The Calculator was originally put together by the Massachusetts Library Association and uses averages from various library sources. It is not specific to all Woodridge PL’s local costs, but it works as a good overview. One of the main areas it does not address is that of databases which the Library subscribes to and which would be prohibitively expensive for individual subscription. These include Morningstar Online and Standard and Poor’s NetAdvantage.  Even without using those specialized resources, if you are using your public library, you are saving money.

At its January, 2012, meeting, the Woodridge Public Library Board of Trustees approved an official Long-Term Service Recognition program for employees. The program recognizes employees who have served ten years or more in continual service to the Library. The program will call for annual recognition by the Board as well as fellow employees and will include a modest amount of time off in the year that the employees reach one of the milestone anniversaries with the Library.

For the first year, 25 staff members were recognized for having been at the Library at least ten years. The longest-serving employee has been at the Library for 34 years.

Following are the staff who have been recognized in this first year along with the number of years they have been at the Library: Judi Borowy (12), Jo Bullin (13), Sheri Daun-Bedford (21), Kelly Girard (34), Joan Hein (10), Jesse Hooks (25), Patsy Horner (22), Sharada Kamath (12), Chris Keefe (16), Ellen King (10), Sue Kujawa (20), Carol Leveillee (25), Julie Lombardo (18), Susan McNeil-Marshall (10), Joel Meisenheimer (16), Linda Montalvo (13), Marj Nicoletti (15), Brenda O’Brien (23), Mary Steinmetz (11), Debbie Such (17), Cindy Tardy-Jones (12), Shireen Tyberg (11), Beth Van Opdorp (17), Amy Weiss (29), and Pam Whitt (21).

The Board believes that the longevity and consistency of staff at the Library provides continuity for the public and reinforces that the Library is truly part of the fabric of the community. Many of these employees live in Woodridge. Whether or not the names and faces of these employees are recognizable to the public who use the Library, these staff members contribute to the mission of the Library in the community. The Board of Trustees would like to salute them.

altDuring the month of February the Woodridge Public Library will be displaying the works of Gene Mark, digital photography. The exhibit is available for viewing during normal Library hours.

Ever since high school, photography was part of Gene‘s life. At first, photography was a pastime and hobby that brightened the prosaic day to day life of a chemical engineer. With time, the hobby grew into a serious endeavor. The artist was fascinated by the ability to emphasize details through photography: the play of light on a flower petals, the graciousness of a plant, and a ripple of colors in a bird‘s feathers. Through these accents she expressed the main idea of the art piece. Interest in macro photography led Gene into a world full of new questions. The artist studied at New York Institute of Photography, exploring professional literature and associating with well known authorities in the field. Gene, time and again, practices photography and experiments with various capabilities of photo technology in search of perfect lighting.

Her family encouraged her to turn a photograph into a card and suggested she create a series of cards that at once gained in popularity. Gene created a fine art and greeting card company called Field Prints which makes a number of Fine Art products and sells them on fieldprints.com. One of the company’s best selling products are hand crafted note cards which have been successfully selling at art boutiques, gift shops, book stores, as well as selected Walgreens and Jewel-Osco locations.

Gene Mark photography has also been used by Kane Boss Productions during the filming of “Boss”, a STARZ Original TV series starring Kelsey Grammer. Gene was awarded 2nd place at the 2011 Love of Art Show. She is a member of the Lemont Artists Guild.

altDuring the month of March the Woodridge Public Library will be displaying the works of Dan Gordey, mixed media. The exhibit is available for viewing during normal Library hours.

Dan has been a Woodridge resident for 18 years. He has worked as a graphic artist for most of that time. “I began to pursue a career in architecture and worked as a draftsman but found it to be a bit too technical. I changed directions and received a degree in illustration from what is now, The Illinois Institute of Art.”

While at the Institute he studied figure drawing and painting. He continued to build on his education by studying the techniques of various artists. “The
ones that influence me in particular are Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta, Alex Ross, Stephen Holland, and Merv Corning.”

After trying a number of mediums he found his preference working in oil and watercolor. “Drawing has always been something I’ve enjoyed, particularly people and portraits. Growing up, sports were also a big part of my childhood. I’ve always had an appreciation for athletes who perform at a level that raises them above everyone else. When it comes to my artwork, I’ve combined two of the pastimes I enjoy the most, sports and painting.”
