Throughout 2017 the Woodridge Public Library will mark 50 years of serving the Woodridge community with special events, giveaways and new services. The Library will kick-off the Golden Anniversary celebrations with the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket Event for all ages on Saturday, January 14, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The library will be transformed into a candy wonderland, with free Willy Wonka candy bars for all attendees. Five lucky winners will find a golden ticket inside their candy wrapper and will receive a $50 Visa gift card. Freshly popped popcorn will be served at the 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. showings of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder. Event attendees can explore the library to discover bins of retro candy, book and movie displays and trivia challenges. Fun children's activities and crafts will take place throughout the day.
The year 1967 saw a referendum formally establishing the Woodridge Public Library. Each month of 2017 the library will offer special Golden Anniversary themed programs related to 50 years of history, literature and entertainment.
A "Blizzard of Programs" will take place in January 2017 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Blizzard of 1967. Attendees to the Brain Fitness program on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 p.m. or the Music Streaming program on Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. will receive commemorative ice scrapers. Movie-goers who attend the Groundhog Day Movie Marathon on Friday, January 27 –show times at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.—will get to make and eat their own mini-blizzard ice cream treats.
Throughout February the Woodridge Library will continue its blizzard theme with programs and giveaways reflecting the idea of being snowed in. Family board games will be played on February 20 from 2 – 4 p.m. Adults, teens and seniors can sign up for Retro Card Games programs on February 2 or February 10, with the first 50 registrants to receive commemorative playing cards. Drawings for a nostalgic Yahtzee dice game set will be held at each of the February Yahtzee Parties.
The first of the new library services being rolled out to mark the 50th Anniversary is free music streaming and music downloads for library cardholders. Patrons can stream music to their smartphone, tablet or computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no limits. Artists range from Adele to Elvis and Ray Charles to One Direction. Access to the Streaming Music Service is now available at woodridgelibrary.org.
The library will be inviting the community at large, as well as community leaders who played a role in establishing and growing the Woodridge Public Library, to a grand 50th Birthday celebration on Saturday, April 22, 2017. More information related to the birthday party—and an invitation for residents to share their own Golden Memories of the past 50 years living in Woodridge and visiting the Woodridge Public Library—will be available on the website and at the library beginning on January 14, during the Golden Ticket kick-off event.
