Building Blocks for Tots

You are invited to stop by the library to pick up a Building Blocks learning kit that you can use with your child to help them get ready for preschool or kindergarten and to learn the early skills they need to be successful readers and learners. New Building Block kits - filled with activity sheets, helpful supplies, and tips for parents-- will be available at the Circulation Desk each Monday. We hand out kits until our supply is gone - there is no registration. We have greatly increased the number of kits available!

Building Blocks for Tots is a unique program, created by the Children’s Department of the Woodridge Public Library, promoting school readiness for children ages 3 through 5. Building Blocks helps parents and caregivers work with children at home by providing weekly learning kits with activities that can be explored together to help children learn or practice concepts or skills that lay the foundation for basic understanding, learning in school, and eventually reading!

Learning ABCs,  numbers, colors, and shapes are part of the weekly learning kits, and each week a different area of learning is highlighted, including Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Development along with early literacy, and social and emotional development.

This program is interactive and will have something new offered throughout the year!

Fall, Winter & Spring Building Blocks: Each week, TAKE HOME BBT kits will be available at the Circulation Desk on a first-come, first-serve basis. Take-Home packets will reinforce alphabet and number skills and focus on new learning, social and developmental skills each month. Find future pickup dates and skill themes for TAKE HOME BBT on the Events Calendar.

Summer Building Block for Tots: Each week, registered families receive a link to a new video (created by the Woodridge Children’s staff) and a packet of materials that contain learning exercises along with supplies for fine motor skills activities. Additionally, each video’s description will have links to online songs or activities for more fun and practice. Every week, families can pick up a new Building Blocks packet in the Children’s department and choose a book from the Building Blocks for Tots weekly book cart. Curbside pickup is also an option!

Building Blocks for Tots is comprehensive, providing a framework that encourages families to work with their children on nationally recognized skill development activities. It is also flexible and designed so families can join at any time – just jump in! Building Block Tots supports parents and grandparents with guidance for conducting fun literacy and academic skill activities and links to entertaining songs, activities, and books for children.

Get ready for school, get ready to read, and get ready to have fun with Building Blocks for Tots!  Participate now: find the next Building Blocks for Tots opportunity on the Events Calendar or talk to a staff member about BBT. This program is designed to be open and rolling.
