3d Printing Request

Overview

The Woodridge Public Library’s Makerbot Replicator Plus three-dimensional printer makes objects in plastic layer by layer according to a 3D design file. Popular objects created with a 3D printer include figurines, jewelry, key chains and chess pieces. The Woodridge Public Library’s 3D Printing service is available to any patron with a library card in good standing that is registered with our library. Minors must have an adult parent or guardian’s permission to submit a 3D print request.

We do not have a 3D scanner and cannot scan objects to be printed.

Getting Started

Find a free ready-to-print 3D design from Thingiverse or create your own design at Tinkercad.

Submitting a Print Request

Files must be submitted in print-ready status.  The Library is not responsible for files that will not print and staff will not make modifications to designs. 

Files will be printed as is.  The file design is the patron’s responsibility, and patrons will be charged for all completed 3D print jobs.

Format:  Files must be in .STL or .OBJ format. We will not accept zip files.

Maximum dimensions:  There is a maximum object size of 11 x 7 x 6 inches.

Maximum print time:  There is a maximum print time of 10 hours.

Color:  Objects will only be printed in a single color. Prints must use library owned PLA filament. You may specify a color preference. Filament is available in black, blue, green, orange, red, and yellow. Specific color requests may delay printing depending upon filament availability.

3D Printing Policy:  Submissions will be prepared by Library staff for printing and will be reviewed for printability and appropriateness. All submissions must follow the 3D Printing Policy.  All 3D printing will be performed by a Woodridge Public Library staff member. Patrons may not operate the 3D printer.

Cost: There is a print cost of $.10 per gram, with a minimum of $1.00 for each item. Staff will contact you with an estimated cost. This is strictly an estimate; final amount may vary.

Staff will give you an estimated timeline for completion. Staff cannot make any deadline guarantees.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for your file to be printed. The Library cannot guarantee that a print job will be ready on a specific day.

Once printed, we will contact you with the final cost and where to pick up your item via the contact information provided. That final cost is added as a fee to your library card. Payment (online or in person) must be made either before or at the time of pickup. If a 3D printed object is not picked up after 14 days, it becomes the Library’s property. Patrons are responsible for paying for print jobs they submit and do not pick up. Your digital file will be deleted once your object is printed.

Only one print request per card will be accepted and printed at a time. Your print job must be picked up before submitting another print request.

Additional Guidelines

The Library’s 3D printer may be used only for safe and lawful purposes. The Library reserves the right to refuse to print any object at staff’s discretion. Patrons will not be permitted to use the Library’s 3D printer to create weapons or materials that are:

  • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law
  • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or that pose a threat to the well-being of others
  • Likely to fail or print incorrectly or likely to cause damage to the 3D printer
  • Obscene or inappropriate for the Library environment
  • In violation of another’s intellectual property rights, e.g. the printers will not be used to produce objects which violate copyright, patent, or trademark protection


The Library reserves the right to:

  • Refuse any request
  • Stop the project due to time or equipment capabilities

3D Print Job Submission

File must be in .STL or .OBJ format.
Files must be less than 50 MB.
Allowed file types: obj stl.
In case first color pick isn't available.
Print cost is 10 cents per gram, with a minimum cost of $1.00 for each item.
